Our Story is a Story of Community

  • Health & Nutrition: Programs like MiChild and Medicaid meant their baby didn't have to go without doctor visits or essential nutrition.

  • Housing & Childcare: Subsidized housing and daycare assistance meant they could go to work knowing their child was safe and they had a roof over their heads.

  • Education: Low-interest student loans kept the door to a better future open when it felt like it was slamming shut.

These resources are not handouts, but launchpads that build strong communities. John Paul learned that when we support young parents, workers, and children when they need it most, we don't just help one family survive; we help our entire community thrive.

Today, John Paul isn't just sharing a memory from his past; he is fighting for the reality of our present. Because he has walked in the shoes of the working families in the 11th District, and knows exactly what is at stake. He is a fierce advocate for protecting these vital programs, determined to ensure that every family in our community has the resources, the opportunity, and the dignity to build a better life for their children.

For nearly 30 years, John Paul and Anna have proudly called the 11th District home, raising their daughters alongside neighbors who share their values of hard work and family. But their American Dream didn't start this way. It began with the same struggles so many in our community are facing right now.

As teenage parents with a newborn, they lived the harsh reality of minimum-wage life. They know the quiet, suffocating anxiety of sitting at the kitchen table, staring at a stack of bills, and agonizing over how to keep the lights on while providing for a baby. It is a heavy burden that too many hardworking families in our neighborhoods carry.

A Testiment to the American Dream

John Paul's story is a powerful testament to the American Dream forged by the values of family, integrity, and community. Raised as the youngest of three brothers in a tight-knit family, his foundations were laid by two extraordinary parents.

John Paul's father was an autoline worker, and a proud member of the United Auto Workers Union (UAW). He started out at Pontiac Motors, later went on to Buick City and Willow Run. His father is a former undocumented immigrant that later went on to become a U.S.Citizen and serve in the United States Army. He has always been profoundly proud of his father, who taught he and his brothers about grit, determination, standing by your principles and fighting for what you believe in.
